Dr Amir Faisal is a cell and molecular biologist by training with 22 years of research experience in cell biology, signal transduction, and drug discovery. He received his PhD in 2004 from Friedrich Miescher Institute for Biomedical Research, Basel followed by postdoctoral training at London Research Institute from 2004-2008. From 2008 to 2014, he worked at the Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) in London, first as a postdoctoral fellow and later as a Senior Scientist. In August 2014, he joined the Biology Department of Syed Babar Ali School of Science and Engineering at LUMS as an Associate Professor on Tenure Track. At LUMS, Dr Faisal has established a vibrant and productive research program in cancer drug discovery in collaboration with the colleagues from Chemistry. He has set up facilities to carry out most of the cell-based assays required for the early phase drug discovery. The multidisciplinary nature of his research means that he collaborates with several groups within and outside Pakistan. The outcome of his research has been the publication of 50 papers in top-ranked journals (>1500 citations), the award of a patent and the discovery of two preclinical development candidates, one of which is nearing completion of phase I clinical trial.
Currently, I am working as Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Pharmacy, The University of Lahore, Lahore - Pakistan. During my doctorate, I have worked on epidemiological factors related to the occurrence of breast cancer in Pakistani women. After that, pyrosequencing was performed at Institute Bergonie, Bordeaux - France. Moreover, I have knowledge about SPSS, GraphPad, and past software. During my masters, I have learned about different techniques including in Vivo and in Vitro mutagenic/antimutagenic studies. Moreover, learned about the different animal models to conduct acute and chronic toxicities. Muhammad Atif Waqar, MD is an Assistant Professor and the founding chief of the Section of Palliative Medicine in the Department of Oncology at the Aga Khan University (AKU), Karachi Pakistan. He is also the Program Director for the post graduate Palliative Medicine fellowship at AKU. He completed his residency training in Internal Medicine from The Brooklyn Hospital Center (an affiliate of the Weil-Cornell Medical School) in New York, U.S.A. He then pursued two successive fellowships in Hospice/Palliative Medicine and Geriatric Medicine at the University of Nevada, School of Medicine in Reno, Nevada U.S.A. Dr. Waqar is board certification in Internal Medicine, Hospice/Palliative Medicine and Geriatric Medicine with the American Board of Internal Medicine and its subspecialties. Prior to relocating to Pakistan and joining the Agha Khan University, Dr. Waqar served as a consultant in Palliative Medicine at the VA Sierra Nevada Healthcare System (VASNHCS) in Reno, Nevada U.S.A. Realizing the dire need for palliative care services in Pakistan, Dr. Waqar relocated to Pakistan to begin setting up the city’s first multidisciplinary palliative care service at the Aga Khan University Hospital in Karachi. Under his leadership and vision, the palliative care program has grown exponentially to now include inpatient palliative care consultations throughout the hospital, as well as admissions to the palliative care service for inpatient end of life care as well as intractable symptom management. To address the community based palliative care needs, his department is now offering daily outpatient palliative care clinics. Drawing from his extensive experience in the realm of non-institutional long term care, Dr. Waqar helped set up an extensive network of multidisciplinary home based palliative care services in Karachi, the first of its kind in Pakistan.
